"...the simple fact of writing helps us to organize our thoughts and see more clearly what is in our surroundings. A paper and pen perform miracles---they alleviate pain, make dreams come true, and summon lost hope..." ~Paulo Coelho (MAKTUB)~

Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

July 23, 2008

About a year ago, an old friend gave me a copy of “Angels and Demons“  by Dan Brown.  Admittedly, I didn’t give much attention to the book because of it’s title. I can’t find the correct term to describe it but the title is just disconcerting…It sounds so religious…and religious horror stories gave me goose bumps. Perhaps the controversy over “The Da Vinci Code” contributed to my intial reaction. And I heard that A & D was a prequel of the said book. So I just kept it along with my pocketbook collection and forgot all about it.

I really love to read, it was my favorite past time since I was in High school. And if you ask me about puppy loves, it is practically non existent because I was more or less pre occupied with my Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. Instead of ganging up with my female classmates, giggling about good looking boys, I was busy with my books. As I grow older, I tried different authors mostly recommended by older friends. I frequented book sales and even befriended several sales ladies so I can avail a copy of a particular book. Thats how I acquired my modest collection of my favorite best-selling authors such as Sidney Sheldon, John Grisham, and Judith McNaught, Nicholas Sparks. These authors had very limited released books, not counting Dan Brown of course because his first book only came out much later. They only had less than 20 books but most are really really good. I collected more books from different authors aside from those three. From thrillers, political drama, to contemporary and historical romantic suspense, mysteries, and at one point I even started reading non-fiction such as biographies. I absolutely love Paulo Coelho.

Im very familiar with Dan Brown though, I have read “Deception Point” and “Digital Fortress“. Those two books are great, the two books both involved the US politics and national security. I enjoyed reading them but still I cant find myself reading my copy of the Angels and Demons. I’ve seen the “The Da Vinci Code” movie and it wasn’t that bad, contrary to what I’ve heard from other people, that of course is my personal opinion.

But one weekend after doing all my regular chores, I tried browsing my collection to look for an old book that I can read for the 2nd or 3rd time, I sometimes do that when I run out of new books to read. There I saw the “A & D”. When I started reading I was surprised to find it really good, the plot was so fast-paced that I dreaded putting it down. The story only transpired in a span of 24 hours, yeah…very much like the “Independence Day“. Brown was so clever to have created such a very fascinating story. It must have took him quite a long time to do extensive research and all. The book only taunted my curiosity on “The Da Vinci Code“, I wanted to read  the book itself. The movie created much controversy that it was only out of curiosity that I endured the long queue at the Cinema house (Of course it helped that I was with someone very special then :) )

Quite unexpectedly, I was just browsing at the book sale when I suddenly saw TDVC, and you wont believe it because the tag price is only P70, Wow! second hand books with bestselling authors costs you about P120-240. I just cant believe how lucky I was that day. My cousin was so envious when I met her later that day. But anyway, I found the book more exciting than the movie, of course it is also the complete version. Like “A &D”, it was also fast paced and very clever but still I like “A & D” better. I chose to ignore the controversial christian issues on the book and concentrated more on the story itself.
